Almada Negreiros
Almada Negreiros (1893 – 1970) was one of the initiators of the Modernist Movement in Portugal and one of the most influential artists of the XX century. He was a painter, illustrator, and draftsman, as well as a writer. Almada Negreiros received the Columbano Award in 1942 and the Domingos Sequeira Award in 1945. His frecoes at the Gare Marítima do Conde de Óbidos and at the Gare Marítima de Alcântara, the stained glasses at the Nossa Senhora de Fátima church, in Lisbon, and the mural “Começar”, at the atrium of the Gulbenkian Foundation are amongst his major works in public space. The collaboration with Portalegre’s tapestry began, in 1949, with the tapestry Bailarina.
