José de Guimarães
José Maria Fernandes Marques was born in Guimarães during 1936. As a tribute to his home town he took the artistic pseudonym José de Guimarães. He graduated in engineering in 1965 and two years later, for the first time he shows in Angola where he lived since then to 1974.Back to Portugal he devoted himself completely to art. Having been awarded a Gulbenkian scholarship during 1977/78, he then started regular presentations of his Works in several museums and shows, from which we can sign out the 14th São Paulo Biennale in 1981 and the show at the Paris Musée d´Art Moderne during 1988, the Berlin National Gallery in 1991 and a retrospective exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum of Serralves during 1992. His work is present in European and Japanese public and private collections. His collaboration with Portalegre Tapestry Manufacture started during 1992.
