Guilherme Camarinha
Guilherme Camarinha (1912 – 1994) was born in Valadares, Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. He studied painting at the School of Fine Arts of Oporto, where he later lectured and participated in the movement + Além against the conservative education and naturalism. From the fifties, Camarinha dedicated himself mainly to public art. He was one of the first artists to collaborate with Portalegre’s Tapestry, in 1949. Several monumental tapestries were produced based of his works, commissioned by the Portuguese government, for the Reading Salon of the National Library, Portuguese Parliament, Cabinet of Ministers, courtrooms of various Court-houses, such as in Lisbon and Amarante. He participated in the I and II Biennials of Lausanne and in the Tapestry Exhibition at the Château d’Angers, in Belgium, in 1981.
