Jorge Martins
Jorge Martins (1940 – ) was born in Lisbon. He studied architecture and painting at the School of Fine Arts of Lisbon. In 1958, Martins showed interest in engraving, influenced by Júlio Pomar. The artist lived and worked in cities such as Paris and New York. He participated in the Portuguese representation of the XVIII Biennial in Sao Paulo. He has held solo and collective exhibitions across the globe. Among such exhibitions is the retrospective at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in 1993, and an exhibition organized by Culturgest about his works, in 2001. He was awarded the Prize A.I.C.A.-S.E.C. of Fine Arts, and the Drawing Prize of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in 1986. His collaboration with the Portalegre’s Tapestry began in 1988.
