Júlio Resende
Júlio Resende (1917 – 2011) was born in Oporto. He studied painting at the School of Fine Arts of Oporto, and had a scholarship in Paris from the Institute for High Culture. Besides painting, he is a decorator, custom designer, illustrator, ceramist, and stained glass [removed][removed] [removed][removed] [removed][removed] artist. As a decorator and custom designer he created sets and figurines for various plays, namely for Gil Vicente’s “Auto da Alma”, for the ballet “Judas” of the Gulbenkian Foundation and for the Portuguese Exhibition at the Osaka World’s Fair. As a stained glass artist, Resende is the author of the stained glasses at the Nossa Senhora da Boavista Church, in Oporto. As a ceramist he did several works for public buildings, such as a panel for the Brussels World’s Fair, in 1958, for the Pousadas de Portugal and the underground station Jardim Zoológico, in Lisbon, among others. He has been awarded several prizes both nationally and abroad, namely the Special Prize at the Sao Paulo Biennial, in 1951, the second Prize in Painting of the Gulbenkian Foundation in 1957, the honorable mention at the Sao Paulo V Biennial, and the AICA Prize in 1985. He is a member of the Royal Academies for Science and the Arts of Belgium. In 1989 the Gulbenkian Foundation held a retrospective on his work, and in 1993 the Júlio Resende Foundation – “Lugar do Desenho” was founded. His collaboration with the Portalegre’s Tapestry began in 1967.
